Buying train ticket on the exact day of travel cost you much more than when you buy it in advance. You can check at www.bahn.com for German train advance purchase. Plan your travel early, look into details of itinerary and pick the most suitable train ticket type. There are various promotional train tickets available, but the trick is buying it early. Example of promotional train tickets in Germany: Bavaria/Bayern ticket, Quer Durchs Land ticket, and Europa Spezial ticket. Click in to each of the promotional ticket link and get to know the detail terms and usage conditions.
1 single ticket can be used to stop by 2 cities apart from your final destination city. Buy transit ticket at www.bahn.com as long as one of below terms is met:
a.) start point in Germany, or
b.) end point in Germany, or
c.) traveling within Germany.
Set up to 2 via points (stop by a city with transit time less than 48 hours), it counted as 1 single ticket price. This works even if your route cross Germany neighboring countries, eg. Austria and Switzerland.
Traveling in group provides you great saving. Promotional tickets mentioned above, comes with group ticket price. For example, Bayern ticket cost 27 Euros for 2 person, for additional travelers add only 4 Euros each, up to 5 person. Make sure you state the number of travelers when you purchase your ticket.
Make sure you buy the right train ticket and also board the right train. You are liable to pay penalty fares for below conditions:
a.) travels without a ticket
b.) travels with invalid ticket, not matching the terms and conditions stated in the ticket, including date, time, route, destination and train type.
c.) stays in first class area with standard ticket
Train conductor randomly picks passenger and checks their ticket on urban and suburban routes, which normally train stops frequently. Be sure to validate your ticket prior to or during train rides at ticket validation machine. For long distance trains, train conductor checks and validates all passenger’s ticket.
If you buy ticket online at www.bahn.com, be sure to bring along printed hard copy ticket to board the train, for validation by train conductor. Also, bring along credit card which you used to buy ticket online, it is needed for validation purpose as identification document/ID. Take note that passport is not a valid identification document/ID for train ticket validation. Refer to above mentioned promotional ticket links for validated train ticket photos.
Train is on time, so be early or at least on time at train station. Exceptional case is flood at small village area, replacement bus is provided. Prepare backup train schedule/itinerary, just in case you miss your train or unexpected train delay.
Start your train travel earliest possible, especially during weekend to avoid the crowd at tourist spots. For long distance travel, avoid arriving final train destination after 6pm, or at the very least, book hotel with receptionist available till late at night.
Quer-Durchs-Land ticket valid for one day with coverage of entire Germany. It valid only on regional trains, look for symbols RB, S-Bahn, RE, IRE. NOT permitted on high speed trains, eg. IC, ICE, EC, RJ, CNL, etc. This ticket is almost similar to Bayern ticket, but valid whole Germany.
Only second class ticket available, not possible to upgrade to first class. From 44 Euros per person, and second to fifth person only 8 euros supplement each. Maximum up to 4 additional accompanying travelers allowed. The number of accompanying passengers has to be locked down during ticket purchase. Quer-Durchs-Land ticket is fixed price ticket, it does not sell out, so no need to rush to buy ticket early.
Ticket valid from 9am onward until 3am the next day, for weekdays.
For Saturday and Sunday, ticket valid all day, from 0am to 3am the next day.
Printed train ticket and credit card which payment was made are required for ticket validation by train conductor during train ride.
Bayern ticket is one day regional train pass within Bayern a.k.a Bavaria state, eg. München(Munich), Füssen(Fussen).It also covers some border areas of Bayern state, eg. Salzburg in Austria. It provides you unlimited access to local trains, S-bahn, buses and trams for a day. This ticket is especially good for travelers who plan to cover most area within Bayern, including countryside.
Bayern Day Ticket
For second class ticket, starts from 23 Euros, add 5 Euros for each additional passenger.
For first class ticket, starts from 34.50 Euros, add 16.50 Euros for each additional passenger.
Do note that maximum up to 4 additional passengers allowed. This also means traveling in group of 5 person giving you great saving as low as 8.6 Euros per person for second class ticket.
Bayern Night Ticket
For second class ticket, starts from 23 Euros, add 2 Euros for each additional passenger.
For first class ticket, starts from 34.50 Euros, add 13.50 Euros for each additional passenger.
This is fixed price, free seating ticket, it does not sell out, so there is no need to rush for buying or secure a ticket early. The ticket can also be used in such a way that partial passengers joining the group at the route along the way. Number of travelers has to be locked down during ticket purchase. Buy your ticket online at www.bahn.com. Buying ticket at ticket counters from train staff charge 2 Euros extra. Buying from ticket machines or online thru internet has no extra charge.
For weekdays, Monday to Friday, ticket valid from 9am onward until 3am the following day.
For weekend, Saturday and Sunday, ticket valid all day, from 0am to 3am the following day.
Hard copy of the train ticket is required. For those who bought ticket online, do bring along the credit card you used for ticket payment. Both hard copy ticket and credit card are mandatory as identification document/ID for ticket validation by train conductor. Ticket bought online has date printed already, so there is no need to validate/stamp ticket at ticket validation machine anymore. Ticket validation is performed manually by the train conductor after train departure during your train ride. Ticket bough online has itinerary printed on ticket too, which can be ignored, as Bayern ticket allows you to take unlimited train ride within a day within Bayern state.
NOT valid on high speed trains, for example, ICE, IC, EC, RJ, D, NZ, TGV, CNL, EN.
Valid on regional train only, for example, RE, IRE, RB, S-Bahn, ALX, BOB.
